Your Data is Valuable. You Should Decide Who Can Access It


In this viewpoint for WIRED UK, Greg Williams explores the possibilities of data analysis for public good instead of sales, marketing or monetary gain

Through exploring the innovation charity Nesta’s “ecosystem of trust” concept, Williams outlines the potential for data points that make up de facto ID to be utilized for large-scale analysis - for good. He asks:

"What if data extraction was aligned with a wider set of values that offered citizens greater control while serving a social purpose?"

Williams notes that this non-monetized version of analytics could revolutionize healthcare, education, policing and more:

Privacy by design, accountability and standards upheld by audited, licensed public and private trusts could help not only ensure that data is leveraged for the common good, but also rebuild public trust in institutions and private companies
