World Bank’s ID4D Creator Reimagines Blockchain-Based Identity

An interview with Dr. Mariana Dahan, founder of the World Bank’s Identification for Development (ID4D) initiative

Dr. Dahan discusses the estimated 1.1 billion people who have no legal identity, and subsequently cannot access basic social services such as state welfare. She notes that this number could be even higher, and says that wars and civil unrest contribute to the high numbers of those becoming stateless:

“Without proof of identity, they are kept in legal limbo for years and denied the chance to build any kind of meaningful life.”

Dr. Dahan also describes her belief in the potential of self-sovereign identity models to move power out of the hands of big tech companies, but warns of the limits of technological solutions:

Today technology is an enabler and a force-multiplier, but not the silver-bullet. It’s not the absolute solution to the problem, and there are human factors that I think need more attention: lack of acceptance, lack of political will, xenophobia, and racism
