Pakistan to launch new registration drive for new and existing refugees

This article explores the new registration drive for refugees created in collaboration with the UN Refugee Agency and two national organizations. They hope to update Pakistan’s current refugee records and to make it easier for refugees to access services.

“Pakistan is currently home to more than 1.4 million registered Afghan refugees, and as many as 1.5 million unregistered ones. However, the last registration drive occurred all the way back in 2007.”

This will also involve collecting biometric and biographic data from Afghan refugees. The biometric data is stored on Proof of Registration cards that can be used as valid forms of identity to access essential services such as healthcare and education.

The UNHCR has insisted that biometric registration should be an essential component of refugee relief programs moving forward
