GOV.UK Verify is the UK government service that lets people prove their identity in order to access vital services. It faced unprecedented demand due to coronavirus, as hundreds of thousands of people required financial support from Universal Credit.

“Delivering this huge growth was vital to making sure thousands of people could access services they urgently needed to support themselves and their families during this public health crisis.”

This article outlines how the government’s identity providers had to improve their systems in order to be able to handle this new flood of traffic. This included the launch of a new ID verification method, where users could scan their passport using an app.

These have been some of the most time sensitive and important tasks that the GOV.UK Verify team has worked on. With social distancing measures in place, it's critical to be able to check someone's identity digitally, as the face-to-face aspects of government services are currently not possible
