Researchers Defeated Advanced Facial Recognition Tech Using Makeup

Study uses makeup to test the limits of facial recognition systems

The article explores the attempts made to fool facial recognition systems (FR) using digitally generated makeup patterns. This involved an app using heatmaps to identify and alter recognizable facial features, which were then physically replicated by artists on ‘blacklisted’ participants.

“[The makeup artist saw] the makeup in the image and then she tried to copy it into the physical world. It's not a perfect copy there. There are differences but it still worked.”

The article also highlights previous similar studies, such as how makeup can be used to impersonate individuals on FR systems.

Using the researchers’ method of applying makeup to the highly identifiable parts of the attacker’s face, they were only recognized in 1.2 percent of the frames
