Reimagining Identity Ecosystems in Sub-Saharan Africa With Mobile

– GSMA

A review of the identity landscape in Benin, Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda

This report provides an overview of the digital ID landscape in Benin, Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda, and explores the role of mobile in strengthening identity ecosystems, both by accelerating enrolment and facilitating remote verification of identities to access private or public services online.

"Africa’s digital economy is fast expanding and the continent has made great strides in mobile connectivity. Most countries are putting strategies in place to take full advantage of the mobile revolution — to achieve national goals, the African Union’s Agenda 2063 to transform Africa into a global powerhouse by 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)."

The report further shows how proof of identity requirements complement digital and financial inclusion efforts in the four Sub-Saharan countries. Mobile technology is uniquely positioned to enable secure and inclusive digital identity, and service providers must explore this relationship when developing ID-linked services.
