Marginalized Aadhaar: Digital Identity in the Time of COVID-19

– Yoti

In this research update, Yoti Digital Identity Fellow, Subhashish Panigrahi, reviews the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on digital identity access among vulnerable populations in India

Panigrahi outlines the impact of the use of Aadhaar, which is reliant on contamination-prone biometric services, and the lack of universal public benefits access for the thousands of Indians now out of work and migrating home.

“The use of Aadhaar-based authentication – or linking the use of Aadhaar with essential social services – makes exclusions more likely than ever.”

Panigrahi also voices concern over centralized data collection and sharing under the guise of COVID-19 suppression and public health support.

Many marginalized communities were already struggling to survive poverty, hunger and systemic exclusions, and things have got even harder as life comes to a standstill thanks to social distancing and wider lockdown regulations
