Lithuania Says Throw Away Chinese Phones Due to Censorship Concerns

Report finds Chinese mobile phones are used for censorship

A report by Lithuania’s Defence Ministry’s National Cyber Security Centre found Chinese mobile phones to have built-in censorship abilities. The country’s government has subsequently urged citizens to stop using, or avoid buying, Chinese phones.

“Xiaomi Corp (1810.HK) have a built-in ability to detect and censor terms such as 'Free Tibet', 'long live Taiwan independence' or 'democracy movement'.”

This article explores Xiaomi Corps’ product, which flags and censors particular terms and phrases. Whilst the company argue it can be switched off, it has been revealed that it can be activated remotely.

The report said the list of terms which could be censored by the Xiaomi phone's system apps...currently includes 449 terms in Chinese and is continuously updated
