An exploration of how the pandemic has affected identity across the African continent

In this report, ID4Africa looks at how the identity community has dealt with the pandemic, and how it will shape the future of ID. It states that COVID has revealed huge faults in social structures and that much of these could be mediated with secure digital identity.

“It is expected that the economic woes in the aftermath of the pandemic will force the adoption of more dramatic digital governance platforms that integrate social safety nets and encourage digital economies, anchored on digital identity.”

The report says that the identity community should no longer strive to provide everyone with an official identity. Rather, what is vital is an identity that allows essential services to be delivered to people, regardless of whether it is part of an official national identity system.

It is clear what the world needs now is not legal identity by 2030, but a useful and safe identity-for-all, NOW
