UN economist Ian Richards explores whether the rapid global move for digitized vaccine passports will force the Swiss government to ignore the referendum rejection of an e-ID

The national digital ID system would have been issued by the government but licensed by private companies, leading Swiss voters to fear private companies would profit from citizens' personal data.

"Swiss justice minister Karin Keller-Sutter justified the involvement of the private sector, saying that the government itself did not have the technology nor wherewithal to implement such a scheme."

Richards asks if discussions over digital vaccine passports for international travel will result in the vote now becoming obsolete.

Putting e-ID under government management creates many possibilities that were not considered in the referendum campaign, including the very digital identity cards and passports that were originally ruled out
