How Digital Identity Can Improve Lives in a Post-COVID-19 World

Harnessing the potential of digital identity in restoring the world's economy

The opportunity to safely and securely identify who we are in a digital age is fundamental in determining how fast the world can recover in different sectors, and in mitigating the effects of COVID-19 on the global economy. There is a need to build trust in the current identification systems and around the secure usage of personal data. 

"People are worried about the impact of technology on their personal data management, but there is one fundamental digital infrastructure layer that can bring transparency to interactions: digital identity."

Governments are required to build more human-centric digital identity modules that are transparent, interoperable, and accessible. More accommodating laws and legal frameworks also need to be formulated that allow digital forms of identification to be equally accepted as physical identification documents.

Policymakers need to be able to move as quickly as the technology and times in which they live. Data protection authorities must offer sufficient data protection legal bases to enable biometric digital identity to function
