Facing Up to the Digital Identity Challenge

– HM Land Registry

In this blog post, Mike Harlow of the UK HM Land Registry announces a virtual event for the British conveyance industry to find new and scalable options for verifying identities when preventing property fraud

Harlow highlights the biometric and cryptographic options that HM Land Registry and partners like the Law Society, the Council for Licensed Conveyancers, and the Chartered Institute for Legal Executives have explored as a result of social distancing and isolation required during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The current crisis has highlighted the immediate need for an easy-to-use, modestly-priced, remote and digitally secure way for conveyancers to securely identify the buyers and sellers of a property."

Harlow explains how the remote verification technology works, and highlights the technology’s success in other government schemes like the EU Settlement Scheme. He argues:

We would encourage potential suppliers of this technology to consider how they might meet the needs of the property market, so that conveyancers might use these cryptographic combined with biometric checks now and in the future
