Ethiopia Overhauls its Education System with IOHK Blockchain Partnership

– City AM

Ethiopia is rolling out digital identity for school pupils

Blockchain company IOHK is collaborating with the Ethiopian government to develop a student and teacher ID system, allowing for improved remote learning and grade verification. School students’ education history will be recorded on the blockchain, meaning that authorities can target areas of poor performance and allocate resources accordingly, while employers can easily verify students’ grades.

“Student IDs will also be paired with data from Learning Management Systems and harnessed by machine learning algorithms to drive personalized teaching, a dynamic curriculum, and data-driven policies and funding.”

The system could be expanded to universities, and is part of a larger movement in Ethiopia towards digital identity, following the release of the government’s national identity standard. Across Africa, governments are increasingly using digital identity as a means to bring services to those who have previously been shut out.

Ethiopia’s blockchain-based education transformation is a key milestone on IOHK’s mission to provide economic identities and employment, social and financial services for the digitally excluded
