Estonian Experience to Lead Global E-Governance Cooperation

Estonia is working with UN agencies to help other countries develop a digital infrastructure to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The article notes that innovative digital technologies can bring countries closer to reaching the SDGs, but that fragmented planning and policymaking has led to overlap and slow progress. UN agencies are now collaborating with Estonia, which is known for its successful digital governance, to build a framework for other countries.

“Unlike in many other fields, there are no standards for e-governance. This cooperation aims to provide them globally, making them available for countries regardless of their economic capabilities.”

Digital identity and authentication will be among the first building blocks towards e-governance, followed by the delivery of government services. The system will take after Estonia’s X-Road, meaning the separate blocks share information with each other at the same time, making them less vulnerable to cyberattacks.
