The Ada Lovelace Institute explain the concept of data stewardship

By exploring the different angles that informed its report - from expert conversations, research, analysis of approaches, to data governance - the Institute propose the following, working definition for data stewardship:

"The responsible use, collection and management of data in a participatory and rights-preserving way."

The report also mentions the widespread misuse of personal data, the concentration of power and market dominance by a few technological players, and the lack of transparency, as practices which undermine public confidence and devalue the importance of data stewardship.

Data stewardship, as we understand it, aims to put data back into the hands of people and society – where it belongs
