An argument that proving eligibility will be the future of identity

The author writes that for some transactions, people should be able to remain anonymous or use a pseudonym while proving that they are eligible - for example, when buying alcohol - but some services will still require more information about a person, such as health or financial records.

“Digital identity therefore needs to be the key that unlocks access to trusted data, which gives that extra assurance rather than simply being a means of identifying yourself to a service.”

Cooper argues that the electronic Know Your Customer process would be a practical starting point for this next step in identity, as it merges person identification with proof of eligibility, and technology is being built that can support this kind of system, such as Decentralized Identifiers and Verifiable Credentials.

What remains is for an entity at scale to put these building blocks together and to change our relationship with digital and identity forever
