Digital identity will help multiply the revenue of mobile network operators (MNOs) in the next five years, according to a new study from Juniper Research

The research found that because of the ubiquity of smartphones with biometric capabilities, mobile network providers will play a crucial role in the development of digital identity systems. They will prove especially important in developing countries where many people lack formal identification.

“The report identified that these capabilities would form a critical part of emerging identity networks, with MNOs able to play the role of a guarantor of identity.”

The article notes that the security of biometric identification via smartphones will play an important role in ensuring financial service providers can trust who their customers are.

Bringing biometric verification within digital identity requires robust orchestration capabilities and extensive partnerships, meaning that digital identity vendors must focus on building out their ecosystems
