Digital Identity: The Case for Specialists

– New America

US Think Tank New America asks why governments, NGOs, and international organizations continue to develop digital identity solutions instead of opting for more valuable external options

As part of its in-progress Future of Property Rights Program paper on self-sovereign digital ID, US Think Tank New America has published a blog post outlining the benefits of buying in ID systems from specialists, versus opting to internally develop solutions.

The post discusses three main benefits:

  1. Lower the burden of risk and responsibility by working with experienced vendors who can implement and manage robust systems, have knowledge of technology such as blockchain and biometrics, and who are capable of scale and longevity.

  2. Expand the use of self-sovereign identity (SSI) and move away from creating a new identity platform for each transaction.

  3. Leave ID to specialists who understand the complex changes within the industry and tech arena to facilitate systems that work and stay relevant.

As the organisation continues its research, it welcomes thoughts from professionals within the international development and identity spaces. You can contribute by emailing: FPR@NewAmerica.org

Why then, do governments, NGOs, and international organizations continue to internally develop digital identity solutions when the utilization of a third-party digital identity provider can result in a more secure, scalable, and user-friendly solution?
