Digital Identity and Trust: Commission Launches Public Consultation on the eIDAS Regulation

The European Commission has opened a public consultation on rules around digital transactions

Consultation on the eIDAS Regulation will be open until October 2, with the goal of collecting views from a diverse range of stakeholders and EU citizens.

Commissioner for Internal Market, Thierry Breton, added "Activity of citizens and businesses increased during the pandemic, the revision of these rules will answer their growing need for simple, trusted and secure way to identify themselves online."

The eIDAS Regulation, which has been in place since 2018, enables people to access cross-border services via digital tools such as e-signatures. The rules provide the groundwork for being able to offer secure and convenient digital identity in the future.

The revision aims to improve its effectiveness, extend its benefits to the private sector and promote trusted digital identities for all Europeans and create a secure and interoperable European Digital Identity which gives citizens control
