The European Commission’s proposal for a universal digital identity system

The Commission has announced its framework for introducing a European Digital Identity which will allow citizens, businesses, and residents to use a digital wallet to prove their identity and share documents.

“The European digital identity will enable us to do in any Member State as we do at home without any extra cost and fewer hurdles.”

Under the new regulations, Member States will offer a digital wallet containing driving licences, diplomas, and bank accounts that, when shared, will allow users to avoid unnecessarily sharing their personal data.

The European Digital Identity wallets will enable people to choose which aspects of their identity, data and certificates they share with third parties, and to keep track of such sharing. User control ensures that only information that needs to be shared will be shared
