India’s digital ID project highlights the risks of centralized systems

The global expansion of digital IDs has led to the introduction of centralized systems which can undermine human rights. While these systems are promoted to improve efficiency with identification and prevent crime, often they do not meet these standards and instead breach human rights.

This report uses Aadhaar, India’s digital ID project, to disprove myths that are used to advance digital ID systems, and with this example reveals how human rights are commonly violated. The main findings from the report offer insights into what should be avoided.
