Belarusians Free to Get ID Cards Instead of Passports From 1 January

Belarus is set to roll out biometric identity cards in a major step towards digital provision of services

The ID cards will serve as citizens’ primary ID within Belarus, with information such as their name, address, and date of birth recorded on a microchip within the card, as well as the ability to create a binding digital signature.

“Belarusians will be able to get access to all the administrative procedures and services that are available digitally. The digital signature feature of the ID card will guarantee the legal value of their actions.”

The ID cards have already been tested against security standards, and it’s hoped that they will come to replace all other documents, though this transition may take up to ten years. They will enable the delivery of services and interaction between citizens, businesses, and the government.

On the whole, the ability to take legally significant actions using ID cards is a key step in the development of new digital services
