An open letter calling on governments to ban biometric recognition technologies

Access Now has partnered with organizations in drafting an open letter calling for a global ban on facial recognition and other biometric technologies due to fears that the trade offs are more harmful to human rights and freedoms than the good they can do.

"The use of facial recognition and remote biometric technologies in publicly accessible spaces enables mass surveillance and discriminatory targeted surveillance. In such cases, the potential for abuse is too great, and the consequences too severe."

They argue that no legal safeguards or regulation could mitigate the detrimental effects that implementing such a technological system would impose, either by government or the private sector, on privacy, freedom and human equity.

These tools have the capacity to identify, follow, single out, and track people everywhere they go, undermining our human rights and civil liberties
